Effects of the Extract of Ganoderma lucidum on Blood Pressure and Lipid Level in Hypertensives

Huh Bong-Ryul
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of Ganoderma lucidum on the pressure and the plasma lipid levels in hypertensives. Forty four volunteer hypertensives, among whom 8 patients were male and 36 patient were female, completed the 4-week follow-up from December 1992 to July 1993. Among the 44 hypertensive patients, the randomly selected 22 patients took 1.8gm extracts of Ganoderma lucidum daily. Their blood pressure, plasma lipid level, hematologic finding, urine analysis finding, subjective side effects and quality of life were checked and compared with those 22 of the placebo group. In the case group, Ganoderma lucidum led to a decrease in the systolic blood pressure by 5.4% after 2 weeks, 5.6% after 3 weeks(p<0.05). The results were not statistically significant when compared with those of the placebo group. There was no significant effect on the diastolic pressure. In the case group, Ganoderma lucidum led to a decrease in the plasma triglyceride level by 6.2% and an increase in the plasma high density lipoprotein level by 4.1%. These results, too, were not statistically significant when compared with those of the placebo group. There was no significant effect on the plasma total cholesterol level and the plasma low density lipoprotein level. In the case group, Ganoderma lucidum led to an increase in social function and physical function. This was statistically significant when compared with those of the placebo group(p<0.05). There was no significant effect on symptom status and emotional function. There were no changes in the fasting blood glucose level, lever function, complete blood count and urine analysis. Diarrhea as a side effect was more frequent in the case group than in the placebo group, and other side effects were not statistically significant compared with the placebo group. We conclude that the 4-week dietary trial of Ganoderma lucidum showed no definite clinical effect on blood pressure and the plasma lipid level. It also showed no specific side effects other than diarrhea, and it was positively effective on social and physical function as quality of life.
